‘Dunhuang to Doncaster’ features dozens of mural reproductions of ancient Buddhist cave paintings, created by Olivia, whose self-portrait has featured on Sky Arts ‘Portrait Artist of the Year’.
The murals are the result of Olivia’s participation in the ‘Silk Road Mural Study and Replication Project” organized by the Chinese National Academy of Arts. The works that Olivia has made faithfully recreate the techniques, colours, and spiritual narratives of the Dunhuang and Xinjiang cave murals, which were made between the 4th and 14th centuries.
In addition, the show presents a variety of contemporary Chinese paintings, including gongbi and ink works. Highlights include Pang’s self-portrait selected for the 2022 Sky Arts “Portrait Artist of the Year”, as well as several pieces selected for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibitions in 2024 and 2025.
Together, the exhibition explores the dialogue between traditional and modern Chinese art, offering visitors a rich and engaging experience, and representing a significant cultural event for the local community.
The exhibition has been organised by Danum Gallery, Library and Museum in partnership with the Friends of Doncaster Museums, DCLC, and Chinese Arts & Heritage, and sponsored by King Asia Foods.
